A future after Zelda

After many adventures with Link in May, there will come a day in which we want to play something outside of Hyrule. These June 2023 games take us to street fighting events, a high-fantasy world, and a bandicoot looking for wumpa fruit. The summer month is also delivering an astounding number of promising indies. Here are the most anticipated June 2023 games to keep an eye on.

Tears of joy or sadness? You decide

It didn’t take long for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to kick into overdrive. That’s sort of its modus operandi: it partially assumes you’ve played Breath of the Wild, and already know some of this particular timeline’s shtick and gameplay.

That’s a good thing for Tears; given how all of the improvements clean up a lot of the mechanics from its predecessor while adding a whole new layer of creativity.

Netherrealm Studios continues to tease the reveal of the next title in its ultra-gory fighter series Mortal Kombat — Following on from the “grain of sand” anniversary video, a new teaser seems to suggest that the unveiling of NRS’ latest is pretty much imminent.

Some employees say they weren’t given notice

Ubisoft could see layoffs of up to 60 employees at two different offices, as part of an organizational shift. Both the North Carolina and Newcastle locations are impacted.

These cuts look to be happening in the Customer Relations side of Ubisoft.

Hyrulin’ the Box

Game marketing has sure changed in the post-internet world. And while we can be grateful for the abandonment of those weird “lad’s mag”  years, there’s definitely something of a yearning for the well (and not-so-well)-conceived commercials of the 1980s and 1990s.

Humanity and Pursuit Force for Extra and Premium members

Sony has revealed the titles they’ll be adding to the Playstation Plus Extra & Premium tier catalogs. It’s, uh, some games. If you’re a member of one of the higher tiers, you’ll get access to the Dishonored games and the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy. Beyond that, there’s also more farming than you can shake a stick at. All of these will hit Tuesday, May 16.

Am I a dreamer?

Originally, this piece was going to be called “Animal Crossing on the GameCube is blatantly better than Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom“. My plan was to take a 4/7th serious stance on the topic, not unlike this old essay on why I prefer Advance Wars to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

As the direct sequel to the biggest Zelda game of all time, expectations are high. Previews have been positive, and as we count down the hours to when Tears of the Kingdom will finally be playable, I’ve been spending my hours thinking back to all the games that have come before it.

A fine vintage

Party for Introverts has revealed its narrative RPG, Cabernet, which is set for release on PC in early 2024.

Cabernet casts you as a 19th-century vampire trying to blend in with aristocrats. You explore the town and command a slate of classic vampire powers, like turning into a bat and hypnotizing people. You use these to steal the blood of rich people. Finally, a protagonist we can root for.
